Energy is a critical factor influencing both operational costs and sustainability. We will delve into why Norway is an ideal destination for data center locations, with a focus on clean and affordable energy. Clean Energy Production: Norway takes pride in its renewable energy production, with hydropower being the dominant source. According to statistics from Statistics Norway (SSB), hydropower accounted for a staggering 95.2 percent of Norway's total power production in 2020. This makes Norway one of the most renewable countries in terms of energy production. The predominance of renewable energy significantly reduces the carbon footprint for data centers located in Norway, providing them with a sustainable profile. Affordable Electricity Prices: Another crucial factor making Norway attractive for data centers is its affordable electricity prices. According to Eurostat, the European statistical agency, Norway had the lowest electricity prices in Europe in 2020, with an average price of 10.4 euros per 100 kWh for households [2]. The low electricity prices are primarily due to the abundant supply of hydropower and competitive energy markets. For data centers, which are major consumers of electricity, these low electricity prices translate into significant cost savings. This makes Norway a cost-effective destination for data center operators looking to reduce their operational expenses. Conclusion: Norway stands out as a premier destination for data center locations due to its abundance of clean and affordable energy. With hydropower as the main source of energy and competitive electricity prices, Norway provides data centers with a competitive advantage in both sustainability and cost-effectiveness. By choosing Norway as a base for data center operations, companies can benefit from the clean energy that reduces their environmental impact, while achieving significant cost savings due to the low electricity prices. Storespeed has been working for the last few years in the assembly of a comprehensive project for developing a series of modern data centers in the Nordics. Our goal is to launch a series of 10x data centers throughout the Nordic region.
The development period is from 2024-2028, and is based on 121 MW in capacity. However, we have the potential to expand the project to 300 MW with the right partner and customers. Our first 40 MW can be ready within 12-16 months from commitment from customers, in addition to our DC01 which is operational already. Our ambitious project is based on in-depth dialogue and commitment to securing both real estate and power in order to be able to fulfill the program. Right now, we are in dialogue with some of the most prominent investors in the market for partnering up with Storespeed. Our customers are asking for services that require more and more power capacity, which again drives the demand for a different setup in order to support a power demand on each rack up to 80 kW.
